Time for Me to Come Out of the Closet

I’ll never forget that day. It was May, 1995. I was sitting in the Los Angeles Coliseum with 80,000 men at a Promise Keepers event and Dr. Tony Evans came to the podium. He was angry. He was fired up. He took the stage with a purpose. He was sick and tired of men going through the motions in life and not taking charge in a world that needed men to be more like William Wallace and Maximus and less like Pee-Wee Herman.

“Come out!” Evans screamed. “Come out of the closet. Everyone else in this town has come out of the closet for one reason or another but you ‘good Christian men’ are hiding in there with the door locked, cowering and refusing to take a stand for God. Come out!! Come out and show yourselves.”

Evans stomped and prowled the stage. The veins in his neck erupted as he continued to shout us down. “Look at you . . . you’re all undercover. You guys have gone CIA for God. You’re ‘secret agent Christians.’ Where are you when your children need you? Why do you refuse to lead your family? Men of God . . . show yourself! Accept your purpose as godly men and act now . . . before it’s too late! The world is waiting for you to come out of the closet and start living the life for which God made you. Come out of the closet!”

That was it. I was cooked. I can still hear those 80,000 voices ringing in my ears today. It was a thunderous, primal, earth-shattering scream. Eighty thousand men roared back their agreement with Dr. Evans as we all at once accepted our failings as men and embraced the need for rebirth, direction,
and purpose.
