Kid Wisdom
Remember the best selling book, All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten? What we've found out is that kids learn even more way past kindergarten.
In today's excerpt from my new book Intelligence For Your Life: Powerful Lessons For Personal Growth, I'm going to let the kids share the life lessons adults often forget.
As TV host Art Linkletter used to say, “Kids say the darndest things.” Well, kids can be very wise too. So, here are a few big lessons you can learn from your kids, courtesy of Rodale Publishing and Women’s Day:
Asking questions is how you figure things out.
Ask lots of questions. That’s why your favorite question should be the one that tops every kid’s list: “Why?” As in, “Why am I upset right now?” “Why do I want to move to Ohio?” “Why am I looking for a big paycheck, when I could have a job that fuels my passions?” Challenge yourself to find out your true motivations.
Your body’s made to shoot hoops, throw baseballs, and jump off diving boards and other stuff.
The word “fitness” doesn’t exist in the secret language of kids. They say having fun. So, make exercise fun! Take up biking, tennis, or skateboarding. When exercise is fun, people are more likely to stick with it.
There’s a reason eight-year-olds get an allowance, not a credit card.
You’re supposed to save up before you buy a new toy. Research shows we spend as much as five times more when we pay with a credit card instead of cash. So, when you go shopping, only buy what you can buy with cash.
“I never had friends later like the ones I had when I was twelve,” says the character Gordie Lachance in the movie Stand by Me.
The trick is to try to be the friend you were at that age: funloving and loyal, with no strings attached. And people with close friends live ten years longer.
The coolest adults are the ones who take the time to really listen.
And you want to grow up to be cool, right? So listen to the people around you. And the next time you’re with others, try being silent for five full minutes. You’d be surprised what you might learn about someone if you’d only let them talk.
The learning never really stops. That's why you'll enjoy reading Intelligence For Your Life: Powerful Lessons For Personal Growth.
